Education in New Jersey

A Question of Education in New Jersey by Jim Dilla

This time of year brings us ice on the Hudson, the end of the football season and school registration. The latter is something many of us thought we wouldn’t be facing in Hoboken. 5 to 10 years ago most residents with young children would migrate to the suburbs; not only for the additional space but also for the celebrated public school system many of these towns have to offer. A stroll around Hoboken today though tells you a different story. Children are everywhere, and as more and more families are electing to enjoy the benefits of raising their families here, the decision of how to educate their Pre-K offspring is sometimes a confusing one. Here’s a little guide that might help you understand your options.
For those with a Hoboken address, the Abbott Program is available for all Pre-K age children. This is a State sponsored full-day free program offered in 6 locations around town. For more information about the program, upcoming Open House and application process, go to: http://www.hobokenk12.powertolearn.net/index.php?q=node/462
As well as the Abbot Program, there are numerous Private facilities in Hoboken that offer Preschool education. All Saints Episcopal Day School, founded in 1985, has grown from a small pre-school group to a fully fledged elementary and middle school, with the first Eighth Grade class graduating in 2012. The school is located at 7th and Washington and 6th and Clinton and offers a half-day program for Pre-school age children; more information can be found at: http://www.allsaintsdayschool.org/
Hoboken Catholic Academy offers Pre-K 3 through 8th Grade and is located at 7th and Madison. The School is affiliated with a number of Hoboken Parishes and is welcoming to students of all faiths and backgrounds. The Pre-K program is a full-day and more information about the school and enrolment process can be found at: http://hobokencatholic.org/index.html
Another option is The Mustard Seed School and their Early Learning Center, The Nest. Located in central Hoboken, this school opened in 1979 with 16 children and currently educates 200. More information can be found at: http://www.mustardseedschool.org/admissions
Steven’s Cooperative School has had a long history in Hoboken, opening initially in 1949 as a playgroup to support the faculty at Steven’s Institute of Technology. Today it supports 370 students from aged 2 to 8th grade and has a number of locations. An active Cooperative structure ensures committed parental involvement in the school. More information can be found at: http://www.stevenscoop.org/index.aspx
The Kaplan School is another successful Cooperative in Hoboken. Located downtown at 1st and Park the pre-school offers a selection of programs from 2 half days to 5 full days for children aged 2 to 4 years. More information can be found at: http://www.hobokensynagogue.org/preschool.php
Many facets of Hoboken are catching up with the challenges so many resident families face when electing to stay here. With a population now approaching 40,000 it has definitely put capacity pressure on the public school infrastructure. However schooling is growing with us and so too are Developers. Some have realized the needs of the growing family and constructed 3 and 4 bedroom condos in Hoboken, perfect for those who, like me, aren’t organized enough to live with 2 kids in a 2 bed unit! For information about such properties and assistance in general with the Hoboken real estate market I would suggest giving Empire Realty Group a call.
